Smile for the Camera, Smile for a Cause

As an organization that served 1.35 million students last year, the Communities In Schools network is constantly busy behind the scenes, brokering partnerships with community resources to make sure the students we serve get the support they need.

But two weeks ago, the Communities In Schools of Kansas staff found itself in front of the cameras, and for good reason. The state office staff members, and Ginger Pollock, one of this year’s Unsung Heroes from Communities In Schools of Wichita/Sedgwick County, got a taste of the spotlight when they participated in a photo shoot for the Communities In Schools Online Store. After three hours of wardrobe changes, posing, and reminders to smile and tilt their heads just a bit more to the left, the Kansas staff unanimously voted against the notion of pursuing modeling as a full-time job. Late night TV, good gear and a great cause

Showing support for Communities In Schools is now as easy as getting dressed in the morning.

On a recent sleepless night, in between an endless series of infomercials, I happened to catch a vintage episode of Saturday Night Live. On the screen, Billy Crystal, in his Fernando Lamas character, was proclaiming excitedly and repeatedly, “It is better to look good than to feel good!”

Although I had probably seen this skit 15-20 times previously, it resonated with me this time, as I realized there was actually a way to do both…in the new Communities In Schools Online Store.

The store launched on the Communities In Schools website on August 1st and features apparel, gifts and items for the home and office, all bearing the logos of Communities In Schools or a customized affiliate logo.
