The Executive Director (ED) of Communities In Schools of the Charleston Area, Inc. is directly responsible to the Board of Directors (BOD) for the overall planning, development, implementation, management, and evaluation of the Communities In Schools affiliate office and CIS school sites.

By bringing resources, services, parents and volunteers into schools, Communities In Schools creates a community of caring adults who work hand-in-hand with educators to make sure young people have the tools they need to stay in school and achieve in life. As the nation's largest dropout prevention organization, we serve nearly 1.5 million students in 2,300 schools.

Key Responsibilities


  • Executing all core functions of CIS Charleston 
  • Upholding operating policies and procedures
  •  Developing and Implementing an Annual Operations Plan for the organization, based on the Board-adopted Strategic Plan
  •  Keeping the Board informed about progress against Annual Operating Goals, as well as any critical issues impacting the structure and operations of the affiliate 
  • Implement and manage the six core functions of CIS Charleston:
    • Community Partnerships
    • Resource Development/Fund Raising
    • Marketing and Public Relations
    • Managing, Expanding and Developing CIS Sites
    • Providing and/or Brokering Quality Youth Programming and Services
    • Data Collection, Evaluation and Reporting
  • Mobilize financial and human resources to support affiliate and program operations
  • Select and train all management staff
  • Negotiate agency agreements
  • Establish and maintain appropriate linkages with school district and social service agency personnel
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with members of the board of directors, including supporting various planning processes of the board
  • Design, present and carry out operational plans
  • Secure training for staff
  • Oversee coordination of all student and family services
  • Establish and maintain clear documentation of all program correspondence and reports
  • Submit progress reports to appropriate local, state and national CIS offices
  • Develop and maintain a management information/evaluation system
  • Establish and maintain appropriate linkages with media representatives

Essential Competencies of the Successful Candidate

  • Seasoned professional with demonstrated experience in management, strategic planning, and board development. At least 5 years of non-profit management
  • High level of interpersonal and communications skills
  • Excellent organization, training, coordination, fund-raising and leadership skills
  • Well connected in education, social service and business community
  • Experience and success with grant writing and donor cultivation
  • Sensitivity to needs of youth and diverse ethnic populations
