Communities In Schools of Southwest Virginia is seeking an Executive Director to be responsible for the overall development and management of the CIS affiliate located in Bristol, Virginia.

By bringing resources, services, parents and volunteers into schools, Communities In Schools creates a community of caring adults who work hand-in-hand with educators to make sure young people have the tools they need to stay in school and achieve in life. As the nation's largest dropout prevention organization, we serve nearly 1.5 million students in 2,300 schools.

Key Responsibilities

Implement and manage the six core functions of a local affiliate:

  • Community Partnerships
  • Resource Development/Fund Raising
  • Marketing and Public Relations
  • Managing, Expanding and Developing CIS Sites
  • Providing and/or Brokering Quality Youth Programming and Services
  • Data Collection, Evaluation and Reporting

Mobilize financial and human resources to support affiliate and program operations

Select and train all management staff

Negotiate agency agreements

Establish and maintain appropriate linkages with school district and social service agency personnel

Establish and maintain productive working relationships with members of the board of directors, including supporting various planning processes of the board

Design, present and carry out operational plans

Secure training for staff

Oversee coordination of all student and family services

Establish and maintain clear documentation of all program correspondence and reports

Submit quarterly progress reports to appropriate local, state and national CIS offices

Develop and maintain a management information/evaluation system

Establish and maintain appropriate linkages with media representatives 

Essential Competencies of the Successful Candidate

Seasoned, experienced management professional. High level of interpersonal and communications skills a must. Well connected in education, social service and business community. Excellent organization, training, coordination, grant writing, fund-raising and leadership skills. Sensitivity to needs of youth and diverse ethnic populations.
