One Step Closer

With the support of CIS, our students stay in school, graduate and go on to bright futures. They all have a story about their journey to who they are today. Alumnus Alex shares his.

When I was introduced to Communities In Schools, I was struggling with school work and motivation to continue my education, but then I met Mr. Dave Remboldt, a Communities In Schools of Mid-America at Southeast Kansas site coordinator. Ever since then, Dave and I have had a great relationship with one another. Once I started my senior year, I was introduced to a new site coordinator, Sarah Stockebrand. There is no one like Sarah.

Ms. Stockebrand helped me with school work, college paperwork, household items and even invited me on a trip to Washington, D.C., as a special guest of CIS to be a spokesperson and share my story with members of Congress. This experience was a game changer for me. If it wasn't for Ms. Stockebrand, and CIS, I wouldn't have experienced my first plane ride, my first Uber, and my first visit to D.C. Seeing the national monuments and participating in the experience itself will always be something I cherish.

Ms. Stockebrand has done so much to keep my success alive that I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for her. During my senior year of high school, our family was hit with money issues. We had to move out of our house in less than a month, and on top of that, the electric bill completely broke us financially. Ms. Stockebrand was there to make sure I was fed, had clothes, and passed all my classes. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have made the honor roll for the first time.

I currently work at an independent living organization as a caregiver. I just graduated from Chanute High School and in August 2017, I will be continuing my education with a full ride scholarship to Neosho County Community College where I will be studying theatre. I have six older brothers, and I'm a first- generation college student. This is a huge accomplishment for me. After completing community college, my goal is to continue my education at a four-year university.

My ultimate goal in life is to be successful. With the help of CIS, and Ms Stockebrand, I feel like I'm one step closer to reaching my goal.
