Jackson School in York County, Pennsylvania, is home to 600 students, 91% of whom live in poverty. With a district-wide high dropout rate and over 1,000 combined behavior-related suspensions, the students of York County needed help. Over the last four years, Communities In Schools of Pennsylvania site coordinator Leyna Rozon has driven the change in Jackson School, empowering her students and putting them on the path to success.

Leyna saw suspension as a major barrier, recognizing a need for positive decision-making services within the school. Single handedly, Leyna assisted hundreds of students through her self-facilitated groups, focusing on reducing aggression and increasing self-esteem. Through these groups, students gained valuable behavioral skills which helped Jackson’s total suspension rate to decrease by over half and increase time spent in the classroom, resulting in students achieving both higher grades and attendance rates. Despite the time commitment of these groups, Leyna consistently case manages an average of 55 students each year.

In the future, Leyna is focused on improving school attendance, behavior, and parent engagement within the school. Aside from the continuation of her support groups, she intends to increase attendance through incentives, rewards, and recognition, while also providing case management. Leyna continues to organize and run the school’s PTA and ensures that all services and activities are free of charge. According to her principal, it’s Leyna’s positive demeanor and “can do” attitude that bring life to both Jackson School and to the district.
