What We're Reading (and Watching) This Week

By Steve Majors Nov. 21, 2014

Giving thanks for our communities is the focus of this week’s “What We’re Reading”

When Connie Maldonado, program coordinator with Communities In Schools-Bay Area learned student Josue Quintanilla was battling brain cancer, she reached out to her community to see what could be done to give Josue something special in his life. Connie discovered Special Spaces Houston and successfully nominated Josue for a room makeover.  The result is a “beautifully decorated room that  includes a comfortable bed, lounge area complete with television and a study area with modern furniture. See for yourself in the Bay Area Citizen.

Communities In Schools of Texas site coordinator Stacey Bradley saw kids coming to school in hoodies despite the cold weather. The Killeen Daily Herald  shows how she teamed up with the Knights of Columbus to hand out warm winter coats.

Speaking of team effort, Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg recently huddled with the Charlotte Hornets to recruit more members for their team school volunteers.

Indeed, across the country, CIS is creating community partnerships to improve the lives of children and their families – especially during the holidays.

Finally, an example of the community giving thanks for the efforts of CIS.  High tech CEO and philanthropist, Paul Sparta, has combined his past as a high school drop out and his passion for Audi into a burning desire to make a difference for Communities In Schools. Visit TheRacetoWin.org to learn about The Race to Win Gran Turismo Florida – an event he’s championing to raise funds for CIS. Then take a look at this video to see how a road trip in his R8 with up and coming race driver Conor Daly made a big impact on kids' lives.
