Communities In Schools (CIS), the nation's largest and most effective dropout prevention organization, has earned another 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's premier nonprofit evaluator. This is the seventh consecutive time that Communities In Schools has earned this top distinction based on its sound fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency.
A 4-star rating is Charity Navigator's highest possible rating and indicates that CIS adheres to sector best practices and executes its mission in a financially efficient way. Attaining a 4-star rating also verifies that Communities In Schools National Office exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in our area of work. Only 2% of the charities evaluated by Charity Navigator have received at least 7 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Communities In Schools outperforms most other charities in America.
“Our supporters are investing in the futures of millions of at-risk students, to help them stay in school and on the path to graduation,” said CIS Chief Operating Officer Steven McCullough. “Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates that we're managing that support wisely and in ways that underscore our commitment to accountability and transparency."
“Communities In Schools' exceptional 4-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” according to Michael Thatcher, President & CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating. This adds Communities In Schools to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Communities In Schools.”
Communities In Schools is also accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has earned a gold status from GuideStar. CIS has been ranked among the top 100 national nonprofits by the NonProfit Times.
Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These Accountability & Transparency metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders.
