For four decades, Communities In Schools (CIS) has done Whatever It Takes to keep young people in school and on track to graduation.
Founder Bill Milliken, a youth advocate in New York City in the 1970s, pioneered the idea of bringing community resources inside public schools where they would be accessible, coordinated and directed toward those who need them the most.
Today, we are the nation’s largest and most effective dropout prevention organization serving nearly 1.5 million young people and their families annually in 25 states and the District of Columbia. Our proven model positions caring adults inside schools where they assess student needs and provide resources to help children succeed. We partner with businesses, social service agencies, health care providers and volunteers. Whether it’s food, school supplies, health care, counseling, academic assistance or a positive role model, CIS ensures that every child we serve has the opportunity for a bright future.
