How CIS Helped Eliza Find Herself

April 15, 2026 Graduation

A senior at Kalkaska High School, one of the biggest choices Eliza made during her high school career wasn't just to make it to graduation day — it was to discover who she truly was. Getting to that point took growth, self-reflection, and the courage to make difficult choices, and Communities In Schools® (CIS®) was there to support her every step of the way.

Eliza found comfort in the CIS room, where something as simple as eating lunch became an opportunity to connect with other students and build new friendships. It was a space where she didn't feel alone.

Whether she was feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, her CIS site coordinator, Ms. Davenport, was there to listen, offer encouragement, and help her find ways to work through challenges.

Having a trusted adult during difficult moments made a lasting impact on her.

Because of CIS, Eliza not only found support — she found her voice. She made the powerful decision to step away from friendships that didn't serve her and to surround herself with people who allowed her to be her authentic self. She built meaningful friendships, including one she had long hoped for, and gained the confidence to speak up and be herself.

To Eliza, “Being Present Matters” means recognizing that your presence has value — that simply showing up can make a difference in someone else's life.

After graduation, Eliza plans to pursue a career as a tattoo artist. Her advice to younger students: show up — there is always someone who looks up to you, someone who appreciates your presence more than you may realize.
