Morgan is Finishing Strong with CIS
Morgan’s senior year at Kalkaska High School wasn’t easy. Each day felt like a challenge, and even getting out of bed was a forced effort. But Morgan kept showing up. Because “Being Present Matters” isn’t just a phrase to her — it’s a choice. A decision to keep going, even on the hardest days.
That choice became easier when Morgan found support through Communities In Schools® (CIS®). With the help of her CIS site coordinators, Ms. Nelson and Ms. Davenport, Morgan began to turn things around.
When Morgan faced legal challenges, Ms. Nelson was there to help her prepare for court — offering guidance on how to dress and behave — and provided emotional support to her during a difficult time.
At school, Ms. Davenport worked alongside Morgan to tackle the academic hurdles that once felt overwhelming. Step by step, she helped Morgan improve in algebra and encouraged her to advocate for the accommodations she needed through her Individualized Education Program (IEP).
With their support, Morgan didn’t just catch up — she made real progress. Today, she is just 1.5 credits away from graduating in May!
After graduation, Morgan plans to pursue a career in early childhood education, with the goal of becoming a pre-K teacher. Her advice to younger students is simple: don't fall behind — turn in your homework and try your best. And most importantly, keep showing up!
