Communities In Schools ® (CIS) Issues Statement in Response to Supreme Court Ruling on DACA

June 18, 2020

Arlington, Va.  - June. 18, 2020 -  Communities In Schools® (CIS), the national organization that empowers all students to stay in school and on a path to graduation, today issued a statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to block efforts to undo the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA offers temporary protection from deportation for approximately 700,000 young people brought to the United States as children.

“Today’s decision is a victory for our “Dreamers” who have been our neighbors, gone to school, worked hard alongside us and in some cases honorably served our country in the military,” said Communities In Schools President and CEO Rey Saldaña. “For some, this country is the only one they remember. They deserve to remain here, without fear, among their family, friends and co-workers.”

Saldaña added, “As a national network committed to supporting all students regardless of their immigration status, we know that some of the young people we have served have lived for far too long under a cloud of uncertainty. The high court’s decision, while welcome, only provides a temporary status that protects them from deportation. Congress must act quickly to help them secure a pathway to citizenship.”
