Roman: On the Importance of Showing Up
Roman is a 2025 graduate with a bright future ahead of them. Below, Roman reflects on lessons learned and the important role that Site Coordinator Jessica Davenport from Communities In Schools® (CIS®) of NW Michigan played as a mentor who helped guide them through life’s challenges during high school. Here's Roman's story in their own words:
My name is Roman. I am a graduating senior of 2025, and very proud to be one. Showing up is difficult, but necessary. During my entire high school career, I found it difficult to show up. Going to school for 8 hours a day was emotionally exhausting. However, it doesn't have to be.
Showing up allowed me to put more effort and focus into what I do at Kalkaska High School, be that academic or extracurricular.
I was able to find joy in studying and serving my school and began to do it more and more. This allowed me to qualify for scholarships and awards, all of which make my resume and applications look amazing. I can’t express the feeling of pride and reward that comes with those pieces of paper.
Being present matters because if you're not, you'll never realize your full potential.

Ms. Davenport was an incredible support and influence this year. From celebrating my accomplishments when no one else would, to going out of her way outside of hours to help me plan my graduation party, to [encouraging me] when senioritis kicked in.
She reminds me every day why showing up is important, and makes my day brighter every time I see her.
One memory that springs to mind is her offering me and my friends to sit in her room during lunch, where we could be ourselves without scrutiny. She accepts everyone for who they are and will stop at nothing to support them.
Many, including me, have made it through our senior year because of Ms. Davenport. I hope one day I can convey how thankful we all are to her.
