More than 20 years after Communities In Schools® (CIS®) helped him navigate high school and envision a future beyond graduation, Rey Saldaña is taking on one of the most intense endurance races in the world.
On October 18, the alumnus turned president and CEO of Communities In Schools will compete in his first full IRONMAN California, using the 140.6-mile challenge to celebrate the power of supportive relationships and raise funds for the organization that helped shape his future.
Saldaña will compete in the triathlon, consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bicycle ride and 26.2-mile marathon run. Seven years after completing an IRONMAN 70.3, he is preparing for his first full-distance competition, marking a personal milestone.
For Saldaña, the challenge is more than athletic achievement. As a high school student in San Antonio, Texas, he benefited from CIS, receiving support that helped him navigate challenges, pursue opportunities and imagine a future he had not yet considered.
Communities In Schools changed the trajectory of my life. The relationships I built through CIS helped me see possibilities for my future that I hadn't yet imagined. This race is a celebration of the students and alumni whose lives have been shaped by those same relationships and a reminder that when we invest in young people, the impact lasts a lifetime.
