Connection Changes Everything

When John entered Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School as a junior, everything felt new and overwhelming. After years of online schooling, crowded hallways, full classrooms, and challenging subjects made it difficult for him to connect with peers, teachers, and even his own learning. 

Dr. Evans, the school’s chief academic officer, noticed that John needed more than academic support; he needed connection and guidance. John was referred to Communities In Schools® (CIS®) of Eastern Pennsylvania, where he could receive the connection and encouragement he needed to navigate his high school transition.  

CIS provided John with a structure he could rely on: a safe space where he could ask questions, rebuild his confidence and find his footing academically. He also began to make social progress, especially when he decided to join the track and field team. 

Track and field solidified another layer of structure, motivation and belonging for John. Through his teammates, he built meaningful friendships and became an active member of his school community – something that felt impossible just earlier. 

At the same time, John’s CIS mentor, Malcolm, helped him focus on the future. Together, they explored college options, identified his career goals, built a resume, and even secured his first after-school job. This gig was more than a paycheck; it was independence, responsibility, and proof that John was capable of more than he once imagined.  

The summer before his senior year, John attended a week-long college program at Moravian University, where he experienced campus life firsthand. Living in a dorm, exploring his passions and learning from world-class faculty suddenly felt within reach. 

Today, John is preparing for his first semester at Kutztown University. His journey was not an independent feat; it happened because a trusted professional noticed that he needed support and connected him with the resources to reach his potential. John’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when students have mentors who believe in them, every step of the way.
