Naomi: Support That Makes a Difference
Naomi, a high school senior, found the support she needed through her Communities In Schools® (CIS®) of Northwest Michigan Site Coordinator Monica Rau. From organizing her schedule and helping her manage stress, to preparing for her driver’s permit with mock tests and paperwork, Monica was by Naomi’s side every step of the way.
When Naomi was struggling during her junior year and thinking about dropping out, Monica offered guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear — the kind of consistent presence that helped Naomi stay on track.
“She’s the only friend that I know is true,” Naomi shared.
CIS also made sure Naomi didn’t miss key milestones. Senior pictures? Taken care of! Prom? Monica met Naomi on a Saturday to help her get ready — doing her hair and makeup so she could feel confident and celebrated.
And when Naomi’s family faced serious challenges at home, CIS stepped in to help find the resources to repair both their well and furnace — making sure their basic needs were met so Naomi could focus on her future.
Naomi’s journey is a powerful reminder that Being Present Matters — showing up consistently, listening without judgment, and believing in a student can change the course of their story.

Hewan is a senior this year and has worked hard to get herself ready to graduate and go to college. Her family immigrated from Ethiopia, and upon coming to America, she experienced many personal struggles, particularly around navigating her senior year.
